How do lash extensions work?

Lash extensions are fibers attached to your natural eyelashes that add fullness, length and tone. Each natural eyelash receives a synthetic eyelash during the process so that your results look natural. The glue used is semi-permanent, so your new lashes will stay in place for weeks.

How to prepare for your lash extension appointment

  • Arrive without makeup on your eyes or face

  • Dress comfortably since you’ll be laying down for up to two hours

  • Bring a photo showing the specific look you’d like to achieve

  • Stop retinol use a few days before your appointment

  • Know your allergies, especially those that might flare up with exposure to lash glue (which can contain latex and other common allergens)

Eyelash Extension Steps

  1. Consultation – Your aesthetician will discuss the process, risks and expected outcome, and also get information about whether you have conditions that may be aggravated by extensions. Together, you’ll decide on what your extensions will look like – you can range from a more natural, subtle look to more dramatically full, curled, long lashes. It’s up to you!

  2. Eye prep – Your aesthetician will have you lie down on the treatment chair and cleanse the area.

  3. Eye tape and gels - Your eyes will be closed for the entire process (typically between 1-2 hours depending on the number of extensions). Your aesthetician will apply gel to your lower lashes to keep them separated from the extension area. These will also be secured with medical tape (this doesn’t touch your lashes).

  4. Application – Your aesthetician will add glue to each individual extension and attach it to a single lash using tweezers. Most extensions are 1 to 1 with natural lashes, although fuller looks can include multiple per lash.

  5. Drying – You will wait around 10 minutes after lash application so that they are able to dry.

  6. Tape/gel removal – The prep gels and tape are removed, your new extensions are brushed, and you’re able to open your eyes and see your new lashes!

Lash Extensions FAQ

How long do eyelash extensions last?

Eyelashes are hair, and they follow the same growth pattern as the other hair on your body. This means that your eyelashes shed and regrow over time naturally. As this process occurs, the false eyelashes will fall off as well.

How can I make my extensions last as long as possible?

There are many ways to ensure that your extensions last as long as possible – be sure to do the following to give them added longevity:

  • Avoid getting them wet for 48 hours after application while the glue fully sets

  • Try to sleep on your back or side if you’re typically a stomach sleeper

  • Avoid exposing your eyelashes to high water pressure – don’t stand under the shower facing it for too long

  • Don’t rub your eyes – be careful when washing your face and avoid eye rubbing as this will disrupt the lashes

  • Don’t apply mascara, oily eye products, or oil-based cleansers – You’re able to shower, swim and exercise without damaging your extensions, but the dryer you can keep them and the less you can disrupt them, the longer they’ll last. Avoid applying oily creams to your eyes as these can break down the glue. Mascara is fine to apply, but only with classic extensions – and removing it will likely break down the glue and shorten the extensions’ lifespan.

  • Don’t use a mechanical eyelash curler; heated curlers are allowed.

Are lash extensions safe?

Yes, eyelash extensions are safe and do not damage your natural lashes when performed correctly and properly maintained. Also, any lashes that break off with extensions will grow back during your lash growth cycle.

If you have an allergy to the lash glue, that can cause irritation, so please let your aesthetician know of any allergies upfront. If you are allergic to cats, you may also be sensitive to mink lash extensions. Talk to your provider to find the approach that will work best for you!
